The Outer Limts Team, Gilbert, Vicki, Bob, Matt, Cory and Jay Congrats to the Outer Limits

Captain Jay Miller and the team aboard the Outer Limits won the 2010 Master Dolphin Tournament on May 29th.  Captain Miller recounts the great day!

The morning was flat calm as we headed south in search of three big Dolphin.  All 20 boats in the event knew the odds were against them.  A high pressure over the Keys for weeks had left the wind week out of the West.  A full moon still hung high in the morning sky, and the Gulfstream was 30 miles offshore. Our best bet, we figured, would be finding debris and working slicks created by grass.  Reason being the light wind left most of the birds we usually look for closer to shore.

The team consisted of Gilbert Hanks, his wife Vicki, Bob Moore, his son Matt, top mate Cory and myself Captain Miller.  We had been fishing for a few hours with not a bite.  Every piece of debris we found was empty.  No bait.  Nothing.  We pulled up to a long slick, two to three hundred yards long and fifty yards wide.  Out of nowhere a 20lb cow dolphin swims across the front of the bow.  We turned to the south and she piled on the short rigger. As Vicki takes control of the cow, Matt hooks another cow on the opposite corner of the boat.  With a swift gaff the first fish was in the box.  Then as the second fish was coming close, a big bull dolphin swam across the corner of the boat.  With some verbal instruction, Bob pitched a ballyhoo and was able to tease the massive fish into inhaling the bait.  The dolphin jumped at least 25 times, quite an aerial show of acrobatics.  After going down and dirty for the next hour, Bob finally got the fish aboard while Cory was money with the gaff.  We knew we had a big fish as his length was an easy 5ft.  Having caught a number of big fish up to 65lbs, we figured this one was at least in the 50's.

The rest of the day was a repeat of the majority of our morning.  One more bite was all we had.  At the scales the big bull weighed 60.1lbs!, fetching the heaviest fish division.  We also won the 3 fish total weight of 96.8lbs in the aggregate division.  A great day, and an awesome team.  Our thanks to all those who support OUTER LIMITS SPORTFISHING!
